NutriSystem Success Stories - Joni Breaking
the Mold Two years ago, my life hit rock bottom and my entire world fell apart. My mom died, I lost my job, and my marriage fell apart—all within about a six-week period. I weighed more than I had ever weighed in my life—including when I was 9 months pregnant. I had pushed my weight up to a whopping 250 pounds and was wearing size 24 pants! I wanted to crawl into a hole and just make the whole world go away.
Hi, I'm Joni. I'm a registered nurse with two boys, and this is my weight-loss story. Things were looking dark for me back then, but I knew I had two wonderful sons and that I had to keep going for them. Koby is now 13 and Parker is 8. They are both really good students. Koby is the best teenager I've ever known. He's very responsible and very protective of me; I'm not sure where that came from. Parker is "Mr. Social": he makes friends everywhere he goes. He also has a very tender heart. So it was because of my kids that I finally decided I had to do something. I am genetically predisposed to weight problems; it runs rampant in my family. I had tried just about everything I could find to lose weight, but nothing worked. Then, one day I saw NutriSystem advertised on TV, so I called the toll-free number. I couldn't believe how easy it was to get the food. I started ordering online and it came right to my door! It doesn't get any easier than that! And I love the food—I hardly knew I was on a weight loss program. Every other "diet" I'd been on almost felt like a punishment for being overweight. I got very burned out on boiled chicken, fish, and salad greens! NutriSystem's food is very nutritional and well balanced. However, my favorite thing about the program is THE CONVENIENCE! My life is very busy; in addition to taking care of my boys, I work full-time in home health care, and recently moved back to Utah to take care of my Dad. There is no way I could have followed a program where I had to weigh and measure the food, count calories, and count fat grams. With NutriSystem I just pop the top off, throw it in the microwave, and I'm good to go! In fact, just today at work I was talking with a coworker about NutriSystem. She stated she needed something easy. I pulled up the website on my computer and showed her how easy it is and how good the food is. I showed her the pictures of some of my favorites. She said she wanted to order it for herself and her daughter. Over the past 2 years, I have lost my weight in "chunks" on NutriSystem—I would lose 30 or 40 pounds and then stabilize for a while, then lose another 30 or so. And the great thing was that when I was stabilizing, I didn't gain anything back! That was amazing—it had never happened with any other diet I had been on! Now I weigh 148 pounds*, I wear size 9-10 pants, and I have more energy than my eight-year-old son! Everything has changed for me since I lost my weight. For example, I used to hate summers. All I wanted to do was lie on the couch with the air conditioner blowing on me. I couldn't even go out and do yard work. Now my boys and I go on bike rides, swimming, and picnicking in the park. I love summers now!
In fact, before I lost the weight, probably the most challenging thing was mustering up the energy for any exercise at all. Pushing past my natural "lazy" self was difficult. Now I love to exercise. It makes me feel invigorated and gives me a great sense of accomplishment. I also love to sing and dance; I taught a children's performing group last year. Teaching these groups takes a lot of time and energy. Before NutriSystem, I didn't have the energy for it; now I do! (I just need to find the time!) I also make better choices now—even with snack foods. So when we go out for "ice cream," we actually get fat-free frozen yogurt. My kids don't know the difference! People react differently to me as well. For example, when I went to apply for my current position, I was told to contact someone named "Linda." When I got there, I realized that "Linda" was someone I had known for several years. I said, "Oh, you're Linda!" She replied, "You're skinny!" She hadn't seen me for a few years and was very surprised! Also, my youngest son commented the other day, "Every single man in the world thinks you're hot!" (I think he has a bit of a biased opinion, of course.) Reactions have been very positive, though. I would tell others who think it's too tough to lose weight, "You can do it!" I have tried every diet ever invented, and this is the easiest to stick to and the very best one out there. As I mentioned earlier, I am genetically predisposed to weight problems, but with NutriSystem, I was able to break out of the mold and do something about it!
